San Mateo County Board Of Education Sues Several Social Media Companies Addicting Students

Lawsuit3

According to a report from ABP Live, Meta—the parent company of Facebook and Instagram—is facing another lawsuit from a school district. The San Mateo County Board of Education has filed a complaint against the social media giant alleging harm to children and teenagers because of social media addiction. The lawsuit is part of a major wave of claims against Meta and other top social media companies. Here, our New Jersey and New York social media addiction lawyer discusses the allegations raised in the lawsuit and highlights the steps to take if social media harmed your child.

San Mateo County Board Alleges Social Media Caused Unprecedented Psychological Problems

The San Mateo County Board of Education has filed a lawsuit against Meta on the grounds that the social media giant (owner of Facebook and Instagram) is responsible for causing a mental health crisis among students. Specifically, the Board of Education argues that it has been required to redirect its resources and away from its core educational objectives to deal with the “unprecedented psychological issues” that students are dealing with. Notably, San Mateo County is not the first school district to file a complaint against Meta. Early this year, Seattle Public Schools took similar legal action. Parents are also suing Meta and other social media companies.

A Facebook Whistleblower Set Off the Wave of Litigation With Disclosures in 2021

In 2021, the Facebook whistleblower (Frances Haugen) disclosed internal documents revealing that the company (Meta) was aware of the negative impact its platforms had on the mental health of children and teenagers. Notably, Instagram was cited as particularly problematic. Haugen’s disclosures showed that Facebook’s own research indicated that Instagram contributed to body image issues, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts among young users, especially girls. Despite knowing the potential harm, the company allegedly prioritized growth and engagement over the well-being of its users.
